Follow Up

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

We’re discussing high stakes testing in my education reform workshop today (with Alan Bersin, CA’s Secretary of Education - I wish I were not so impressed by names and status, but there it is), and our stack of preparatory readings included another on IQ testing. Hoo-ray. No more lectures, I promise, but I did enjoy [...]

Vegetable Torte

Monday, September 25th, 2006

We gave this recipe a shot yesterday when we had some friends over for dinner, and it was so tasty I discouraged seconds so that we would have more leftovers. The only change I made was to add a few shakes of red pepper to the tomato/onion sauce.
Ingredients
2 large onions (about 1 pound)
1 garlic clove
about [...]

Patriotism

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Doug: Sometimes I still get up in the morning and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Me: Just cause you like it?
Doug: Yeah, you know, it fills the hole.

Take off that RED SHIRT!

Go Bears!

We scaled “Tightwad Hill” today for our first Cal game and discovered:
a) a whole Berkeley subculture of fans who climb a dusty, slippery hill rather than buy tickets, who clean up after themselves despite dangerous levels of drinking, who share whatever food and drink they brought, and who harrass anyone who shows up with [...]

What I’m learning in school: IQ

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I’ve never known much about IQ tests or how useful it is as a measurement, though I’ve had the vague impression that the whole concept was outdated and problematic. So I was quite interested to learn about it in my data collection/research methods class this week. I won’t subject you to the real topic of [...]

That’s right, fools! Recipes!

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Oh, it’s going to be exciting (for me) as one by one I roll out the topics I have in store. Recipes, once relegated to the sidebar—requiring code-spelunking every time I wanted to update them—will now come front and center. But I promise, only the best.
I’ll kick things off with the first guacamole recipe I [...]

Oh my god, I have a CAREER

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Matty asked me what I thought of this*, and boy did I have an answer. I may be dedicating years of my life to a frustrating and futile endeavor, but I love that what I’m about to do for a living makes me want to write in CAPS.
Brief synopsis of the argument, in case you [...]

In answer to questions

Monday, September 18th, 2006

The picture at the top is from Yosemite, about a year ago. Here’s the original. I am actually zipping up my coat. But I could swear it’s navel gazing.
Puddledog archives will remain intact and online, collecting comments from random passers-by. So you can access at any time your favorite teaching haiku, rant about how busy [...]

Hello world!

What. Is. Up?
The launch of a new blog (the birth? the christening? the presentation to society?) demands the sort of monumentally clever and wry-yet-moving post that intimidates me to the point of severe procrastination, so I am just blazing right through the performance anxiety and giving you the sort of first-draft writing you have come [...]
