morning in america?

Well, that was something.
Some dude on the train this morning was doing a little cheer, “It is the O, it is the B, it is the A…” Strangers were greeting each other in the station, “It’s a new day, brother.” “A new day!” On my elevator ride up to the office, usually a sedate affair, one of the women burst out into a little song-and-dance that went, “We have a new pres-i-dent!” Another talked about how she couldn’t find a newspaper because people were buying them all, to save. Spontaneous camaraderie, like 9-11, but joyful.
Watching the returns come in last night, I kept thinking back to the 2000 election, the first I really paid attention to, going to sleep on a Bush win and waking up to a month of uncertainty. Thinking, even after the Supreme Court halted the recount, how much damage could Bush the ineffectual governor really do after such a slim victory?
…
Well, we all know how that turned out. Now, eight years later, a fresh start. Not that it will be smooth sailing from here; eight years of the Bush administration dug this country into a pretty huge hole. But at the very least, we’ll have a thoughtful, competent, non-sociopath in charge. I believe that things will get better, not worse.
I am bummed about Prop 8 in California. But who knows, maybe one day we’ll have a gay president, and our kids will wonder what all the fuss was about.
