on being a grown-up
When I imagined this fall, it was as a featureless stretch of time: 9-5 workdays, new routines, good habits, and sober adulthood. With the end of my insane life-altering adventures (like teaching 8th grade) and retreats into semi-childhood (grad school), the excitement would be over, and I would be simply a grown-up, working at a company whose name is three letters that don’t stand for anything.
The reality has turned out to be more, as Bryan put it, textured. I spent the first half of October in Houston and then near Boston—business trips with weekend visits to friends and family tacked on. Bryan’s also been traveling (he’s written about some of our adventuring), and more is planned for work and pleasure. Regarding the job, I love the projects that I’ve been working on and feel that my random skill set is being nicely employed. There’s also been some Learning and Growing; for example, I’m getting over my aversion to cold-calling people simply because I’ve had to do it so much. (Also, when asking a stranger for a favor or an hour of their time, I find it much more comfortable to be a representative of ABC Associates than to be just Leslie, Random Grad Student.)
When I’m not at work, I’ve been spending plenty of time with my fabulous friends who plan fabulous outings for us (like birthday wine tasting last weekend). Our new bikes are thoroughly incorporated into our errand-running, to the point where it’s ridiculous for me to own a car—though I haven’t quite mustered the will to try selling mine. We’re also in full research mode to determine how crazy it would be for us to get a dog. I came home from the library on Monday with the eerily titled “We’re Having a Puppy!” And finally, I’ve been busily forgetting all the German I ever knew. Jah, wirklich!
That’s all the news fit to print. We’re entertaining Friday, so depending on how that goes I may have a recipe or two for you. The visual tour of our fall is on gallery, as usual.
Here’s a shot of us tasting some wine last weekend.

Let me know if business travel ever lands you anywhere near Seattle, as I moved north of you about 4 months ago.
